Sistah Space - Update
The domestic violence charity Sistah Space continues to be in conflict with Hackney Council over their premises.
We are concerned about the stress that this issue has had on the organisation and its ability to support vulnerable women of African and Carribean heritage.Â
We have expressed these concerns with another joint letter with the Womens Equality Party and Hackney LibDems which you can read here.

HGP Greenvine - 24 July 2020
Hello,
We have had a busy time this week at the full council meeting đ showing that even if we don't have any councillors (yet) we can still be the effective opposition that the people of Hackney need.Â
We will have councillors after the 2022 local elections đââď¸đââď¸ but we don't yet know who they will be! We are now looking for new candidates from across the borough, could one of them be you?Â
If you think you might be interested then we have a fantastic event on Wednesday đ that will give you a full flavour on what the role involves, hope to see you there, non-members very welcome.

A letter from the British government classifying Paulette Wilson as an illegal immigrant shook her sense of identity and belonging. âHostile environmentâ policies years in the making meant that Wilson and other victims of the Windrush scandal had their right to residency in the UK called into question.

Hackney Council Scrutiny
Hackney Green Party members continue to hold Hackney Council to account and this week asked a number of questions at the full council meeting.Â
Full meeting agenda here
http://mginternet.hackney.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=112&MId=5053
We asked two specific questions about hoe Hackney Council is responding to the climate emergency and its commitment to achieve net zero carbon emmissions.
Question from Reiner Tegtmeyer to the Cabinet Member for Energy, Waste, Transport and Public Realm
What are the âMeasures of Successâ the Council is using to annually examine whether plans are successfully implemented and monitored, i.e. are progressing as planned, and whether and how these measures contribute to the Councilâs aim to deliver net zero emissions across Council functions by 2040?
Question from Alex Armitage to Mayor Glanville
There is minimal analysis of upfront carbon emissions associated with construction in Hackney. There is also no analysis of embedded carbon emissions that could be saved if buildings were refurbished instead of demolished and replaced. Will you commit to conducting these analyses to shape planning policy around the Climate Emergency?
A good write up of the answers given is here
https://www.hackneycitizen.co.uk/2020/07/23/council-gives-progress-update-year-climate-emergency-declaration/
You can watch the whole meeting here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRS66JHdJ4Q&feature=youtu.be&medium=email&source=govdelivery
Other questions from Hackney Green Party members were:
Question from Zoe Garbett to the Cabinet Member for Planning Culture and Inclusive Economy
A recent high court ruling has highlighted the councilâs failings in planning practice. What is the council doing to ensure that councillors abide by the planning code and ensure objections are heard?
Question from Feodora Rayner to Deputy Mayor Rennison
The government suggest landlords âoffer support and understanding*â to tenants who have seen a loss of income during the covid-19 pandemic. Is the council able to offer any more tangible support to Hackney renters (both residential and commercial) having to choose between paying wages, buying groceries or facing eviction?
Question from Alastair Binnie-Lubbock to the Cabinet Member for Housing Services
Seaton Point residents in Hackney Downs have been told they must accept front door replacements that are "as good as, or better" than their current ones. What assessment was done on existing doors installed as part of refurbishment in 2005, indicating they are no longer safe?
We'll give a full update on all the answers given and the next steps in a later edition of Greenvine.
Sistah Space - Update
Sistah Space met with the the council on Tuesday and subsequently released this stament on their gofundme page:
We have lost our appeal to extend our stay at our current location which means we might have just 7 days to vacate unless we can pay commercial rent.
Thank you all so much for your generous donations. Originally we had set a ÂŁ30,000 target so we could be secure for 2/3 years on charity rates and also pay an additional domestic & sexual violence advisor. Hackney Council councillors met with us yesterday (21/7/20) and have denied us our request to stay put until 31st March. They are insisting that we return to our old, unfit, unsafe, shop front building in Clapton, known locally as the 'murder mile'. This place is completely isolated and is especially terrifying at night.
They say that there are no other buildings available at charity rates, so we go back to Clapton or find our own places to go.
After 4 years of waiting for them to keep their promise to us, we realised that they have no intention of relocating us and insist that we said we'd go back.
So if we want to stay at our current safe address we have to pay the full commercial rent which is ÂŁ22,000 a year. We have decided it might be necessary to pay that so that we remain safe during Covid-19 because we are in that high risk group.
It will mean that the vast majority of our donations will have to go to paying Hackney Council as they say they can't reduce the rent for us. Hopefully we can be relocated to a more inexpensive place after a year.
We are waiting for a contract which we are told we must sign. We are unclear if we will be even be permitted to rent our current address.
Thank you all for your much needed support.
Read our Joint Letter with the Womens Equality Party and Hackney LibDems about this issue.
The response from Mayor Glanville stated that Sistah Space would not have to move until it was safe to do so, you can read the full letter here.

HGP Greenvine 13 July 2020
We've had a busy few days here at Hackney Greens đŞ, last weekend we published an open letter detailing how we would tackle the Climate And Ecological Catastrophe if were running Hackney Council. We demand that the current leaders adopt the policies as a matter of urgency.
Today, with the Hackney Womenâs Equality Party and Hackney Liberal Democrats we have sent a joint letter to Mayor Philip Glanville seeking assurances that arrangements are in place to ensure we avoid the loss of Sistah Space.

We have grown increasingly concerned with the situation regarding Sistah Space and the proposed relocation to their previous address in Clapton.
Today, with the Hackney Womenâs Equality Party and Hackney Liberal Democrats whe have sent a joint letter to Mayor Philip Glanville seeking assurances that arrangements are in place to ensure we avoid the loss of this essential service for African and Caribbean women suffering from domestic abuse across Hackney and London and asking the following:
- What action is the Council taking to ensure Sistah Space can remain in their
current location until at least after March 31st 2021, as they have requested? - Why is the Council evicting Sistah Space from their current location to a
property that is unsuitable for their needs, unsafe and in the middle of a
pandemic? - What assurances can the Council make to ensure that Sistah Space can move
to suitable premises once it is safe to do so?

Preventing A Climate And Ecological Catastrophe - Open Letter
We ask the council to use the Covid-19 Emergency measures as a first step to transition to a net-zero emission (NZE) council by 2030.
The recovery from this pandemic must be a green recovery. We, Hackney Green Party, would:
- Consult and closely work with Hackney residents, grassroot groups and businesses to ensure all voices are heard and to coproduce solutions to reach the net-zero emissions 2030 (NZE30) target
- Set up an annual Citizenâs Assembly for effective scrutiny and to explore solutions
- Recruit a Climate Change Programme Director to provide leadership and challenge within the council
- Set realistic intermediate targets, and publish regular and annual monitoring updates about compliance with set targets
- Fully divest the councilâs pension fund from any existing commitments and immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels and large-scale Agribusiness, Livestock and Agricultural Commodities trading companies. We would urgently reinvest in, and support the development of, solutions to the climate and ecological crisis, securing return on investment through ethical, fossil fuel-free options.
- Develop and implement a food strategy for council-run schools and canteens that contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through production, transport, distribution and consumption of food (including imported food products); encourage and advise restaurants, cafÊs and educational facilities in doing likewise
- Closely consult and cooperate with neighbouring boroughs, London Assembly and the Mayorâs office in creating a London-wide network of cycling routes and car-free streets
- Develop a borough-wide network of car-free streets and cycling and walking routes
- Withdraw support of the Edmonton Incinerator rebuild project and invest in a range of measures to incentivise more recycling and enable a circular economy (reuse, repair, regenerate) to significantly reduce unnecessary waste[3]
- Develop, publish and regularly update a carbon audit of all council-related activities (transport, housing maintenance, refurbishments and construction, services, parks and green spaces, private and business waste) and planned projects
- Commission independent carbon audits of businesses and private properties, in close cooperation with local businesses, landlordsâ and tenantsâ associations and publish the results as part of the Councilâs carbon budgeting processes
- Apply principles of a circular economy to the building sector, balancing total carbon emissions (including embodied carbon) through refurbishment of old stock, demolition and new builds
- Require developers to meet sustainable standards and RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge Targets for embodied and operational carbon in construction and procurement
- Commission and publish an annual independent audit of green job creation through the shift to procuring, promoting and using renewable energy and emission reducing products (such as bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters, electric vehicles) from New Green Deal companies.

London Renters Union Day of Action â June 27th
#CantPayWontPay Day of Action this Saturday
Join renters from across London this Saturday as we come together for our first day of action for our Canât Pay Wonât Pay campaign.
This is an opportunity to use eye-catching actions to publicise the campaign demands, invite more people to join, and to express solidarity on the streets with your fellow renters.
The focus of actions on this day will be on the way that the current housing system is particularly dangerous to our black and brown communities. Racism has always been a feature of our housing system - our racialised members are impacted both by racist landlords and racist laws, such as the Right to Rent legislation and no recourse to public funds (NRPF), which make it more difficult to access good quality housing and justice in the housing system.Â

Build Back Better Campaign
The coronavirus pandemic has turned the world upside down, exposing major weaknesses in our economy and the deep-seated inequalities in our society that mean the most vulnerable people have been hit the hardest.
But what we do next could change everything. As the world recovers, we have a chance to reset the clock and build back better than before.
We need something new. We need a new deal that prioritises people, invests in our NHS and creates a robust, shockproof economy that is capable of tackling the climate crisis.
Any coronavirus recovery plan must be built on the following principles:
- Secure the health and needs of everyone in the UK now and into the future
- Protect and invest in our public services
- Rebuild society with a transformative Green New Deal
- Invest in people
- Build solidarity and community across borders

Refugee Week is a UK-wide festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees. Founded in 1998 and held every year around World Refugee Day on the 20 June, Refugee Week is also a growing global movement.
Through a programme of arts, cultural and educational events alongside media and creative campaigns, Refugee Week brings about positive encounters between communities, helping them to connect and learn from each other, and promoting a culture of welcome.
Refugee Week is an umbrella festival, and anyone can get involved by holding or joining an event or activity. Refugee Week events happen in all kinds of different spaces and range from arts festivals, exhibitions, film screenings and museum tours to football tournaments, public talks and activities in schools.

Stop in with Sian - Episode 8 - Black Lives Matter, and the arts in crisis
This week, Sian expresses her solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protests and her disgust at the President's stunts and military threats, and calls for a ban on UK exports of offensive police equipment, and for dismantling systemic racism in the UK.
Special Green guests on the sofa this week come from the arts and creative industries and share the works they are creating, Sam Murray from the music industry, actor and London Assembly candidate Zack Polanski, filmmaker Charlotte George and writer and theatre maker Eleanor Margolies.

The system isnât broken. It was built this way. Writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch speaks about how modern Britain was built on hundreds of years of oppression in the form of the British Empire. Hirsch calls for Britain to recognise its dark colonial historyâwidespread violence, displacement and cultural erasureâwhich has been omitted from the British national narrative that sees Britishness as synonymous with decency and civilisation.

Local Projects
Can you help water a thirsty garden at your local Overground station this summer?
Energy Garden has supported communities across London to transform Overground station platforms with planter boxes, raised beds and trackside planting. We currently have gardens at Hackney Downs, Stoke Newington and Clapton stations, all of which struggled during lockdown. We are now trying to rebuild the community groups and revive the gardens.
- Hackney Downs has upwards of 8 small planters and 2 large raised beds.
- Stoke Newington has 4 large planter boxes under the station's historic arches, all in dire need of love.
- Clapton has 4-5 large planter boxes and one massive planter box.
The idea is that these are your gardens! The soil is there, and Energy Garden will provide material support in terms of plants, soil, and tools. We will introduce you to station staff and ensure you are aware of all safety measures while at the station. From there, itâs just a matter of deciding what you would like to see growing and making sure the plants are watered throughout the summer.
We will connect you via Whatsapp to your stationâs group to organise activities and observe social distancing between members. This is a fun and rewarding way to meet your neighbours, station staff and other community change makers and no prior gardening experience is required. In September, we will have a Harvest party to celebrate all the produce that our groups and gardens provide.
Please call 07444 613635, email [email protected] or DM @energygardenldn if you are interested. Happy gardening!

This fight starts with listening and education and we have included a number of links below to help you on your journey. đ
