Stop in with Siân Episode 4: Homelessness and humanity

This week's episode features Hackney Green Party Member Tyrone Scott, housing activist and Shelter worker.

He joins Siân on the sofa to talk about the impact of the coronavirus crisis on housing: from those who were already homeless, to renters facing upcoming debts and evictions.

We also screen a taster of a video inspired by Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, which celebrates our shared humanity and diversity in these difficult times.

sian_alex5.jpg

Stop in with Siân Episode 5: Protect our NHS and DIY face-coverings

Siân talks to Hackney Green Party Member Alex Armitage, a children’s doctor working on the NHS front line, about his work.

Alex, who has appeared on BBC Panorama appealing for more testing and more personal protective equipment, will talk about how we can win better support for our NHS workers in this time of crisis.

We'll also be looking at homemade face coverings, and experimenting with what static electricity can do.

And here is Alex on his rooftop last night, chanting for PPE

why_privatisation_is_failing.jpg

Young Greens Event: Our NHS and social care system were never ready to handle a global pandemic. Austerity and underfunding are part of the story. But privatisation is the other piece of the puzzle.

Join us on 7 May at 8.05pm to hear from Ellen Lees, Campaigns Officer at the fast growing anti-privatisation campaigning organisation, We Own It. She'll be explaining how the logic of privatisation has failed us in this crisis, and why we need public ownership to make sure we're ready for the next one.

Message from Dr Alex Armitage, who stood as our Hackney North candidate in the general election.

Tonight I stood up with fellow key workers to #chantforPPE.

It’s so great to get such strong public support- but we don’t feel that support from the government.

We need more testing, better wages & contracts for key workers, more scrutiny, more transparency...and more PPE

Hello, how are you this week? 🖐

If not great, that's totally understandable, this is a global crisis and it is ok to feel sadness and grief, be anxious, overwhelmed and not be able to function as well as you hoped. Nobody is having a positive time here .. just surviving is good enough. 💚👏

Below is your weekly dose of news, advice and activities from us at the Hackney Green Party to help you look after yourself and others if you can.

Campaign: Act Now to Save Ridley Road

ridley_road_sticker.jpeg

Ridley Road could change forever – the market, shopping village and artist studios are all under threat and we need to act now to save them.
Hackney Council have promised to protect Ridley Road but act to the contrary.

The Council recently implemented draconian new trading conditions and fee hikes for market traders following a tick box consultation with the results imposed by officers using delegated powers to side-step elected representatives.

The Council will soon consider a planning application which proposes to clear the indoor market and artist’s studios to make way for unaffordable high-end apartments, office space and retail units that will divide the street, destroying its unique character and result in:

  • Loss of affordable space for 60 artists and designers; this will not be replaced
  • Displaced black and minority ethnic businesses which are providing an essential service to Hackney residents
  • Loss of valuable storage space for traders
  • Unaffordable apartments and no social housing
  • Carbon intensive development ignoring alternatives which are better for the environment and serve real community interests.

It was reported by the Hackney Gazette that the decision making meeting was going to be held recently, online and with no prior warning to those who have objected – the Save Ridley Road Campaign are calling to know when the meeting is and how it will operate to allow traders, studio artists and supporters of the market to participate.

  • OBJECT! It isn’t too late to send an objection to the council; every objection counts. Visit this page for details of how to respond
  • Follow the campaign on twitter @SaveRidleyRoad and look out for further action we will be taking over the next few weeks
  • Continue to support the market – the food stall remain in operation and social distancing measures are in place
  • Watch and share these wonderful videos of Tamara and Andrew, Ridley Road artists, talking about their work and the importance of the studios
  • Share all of the above with your networks and mobilise more people in to action!

Covid-19 makes it impossible to stage a traditional public demonstration, if you have any ideas about how we are raise more awareness please email Zoë (zgarbett@hotmail.co.uk) know.

If you want to connect and get involved in your local community the Hackney Covid 19 Mutual Aid Facebook group is a great resource for sharing information that people in Hackney would find useful when supporting each other in our local areas.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/280285692955390/

It also lists WhatsApp groups you can join for each local ward, some of these also have sub groups at individual street levels. Join your local group to get more details.

A full list of Mutual Aid groups are here

Alternatively a Facebook search will usually bring up a community group in their area and you can ask them to get in contact.

Local Support

covid_hackney.jpg

If you want to connect and get involved in your local community the Hackney Covid 19 Mutual Aid Facebook group is a great resource for sharing information that people in Hackney would find useful when supporting each other in our local areas.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/280285692955390/

It also lists WhatsApp groups you can join for each local ward, some of these also have sub groups at individual street levels. Join your local group to get more details.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/280285692955390/permalink/280307612953198/

If you are worried about elderly relatives in other parts of the country, especially those who are not computer literate, it can be helpful to put them in touch with their local group.
A full list of Mutual Aid groups are here
https://covidmutualaid.org/local-groups/
Alternatively a Facebook search will usually bring up a community group in their area and you can ask them to get in contact.

Our doctors, nurses and other professionals will be able to refer people in to NHS Volunteer Responders and be confident that they have been matched with a reliable, named volunteer.

Alternatively a Facebook search will usually bring up a community group in their area and you can ask them to get in contact.

NHS Volunteer Responders

NHS Volunteer Responders has been set up to support the NHS during the COVID-19 outbreak. To do this we need an 'army' of volunteers who can support the 1.5m people in England who are at most risk from the virus to stay well. Our doctors, nurses and other professionals will be able to refer people in to NHS Volunteer Responders and be confident that they have been matched with a reliable, named volunteer.

We need your help to grow 🌱

We are getting closer realising our dream but not there yet of having a part time staff member to help us step up activities here in Hackney and help ensure we get Greens elected.

Our plan is to increase donations by around £350/month and we're 56% there already! 😀

Can you get us to 100%? 📈

We could get there by:

✅ 18 people giving £10/month, or

✅ 9 people giving £20/month, or

✅ 12 people giving £15/month

YES I would like to help Hackney Green Party fund a staff member

We've had a shared staff member for short periods in the past and it makes an amazing difference having someone who can be focussed on keeping our campaigns organised and our members co-ordinated.

And finally..

Hackney Green Party members are hard at work all year round - campaigning on local issues, sweating over press releases, delivering leaflets and canvassing for support in forthcoming elections.

We would love for you to help us make a difference either by coming to one of the events above or by simply donating here.

https://www.hackneygreens.org.uk/donate

If you have any feedback on this newsletter or suggestions for items to include next week then email Graham Woodruff at graham@claymallet.net

Deadline for content for the Friday email is Thursday 1pm, only Hackney Green Party items will definitely be listed, others may be if they fit our values and there is enough time and space to add them.

Not a member?

We are proud to do politics differently but we need determined, caring people like you to help us make it happen. Join the thousands of people who are already members and stand up for what matters.
