Ülgen Semerci

Ülgen is a visual artist who has exhibited internationally. She was born in Turkey, where she became involved with politics through pro-democracy protests, minority rights, and as a volunteer for a women’s shelter. She made Hackney her home almost ten years ago, and as a councillor for Shacklewell will continue to advocate for migrant communities, as well as decent housing. She says, “Hackney is welcoming. I’ve found a community based on solidarity and collective responsibility. That shapes my work, my life and my politics”.

Dr Cathy Troupp

Cathy is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist with a long career in the NHS as a clinician, teacher and team leader. She has worked as a therapist for refugees and asylum-seekers, and previously as a journalist. Cathy has lived in Hackney for 35 years and joined the Green Party through her activism for Palestine. She views local, national and international politics as intertwined. Cathy makes the connection between mental health and social justice, and her advocacy for the rights of all residents in our borough. She says, “whether Hackney Council divests its pension fund from Israeli arms manufacturers, or tackles black mould in local housing, we are all working for human rights at every level”.
