Hackney Green Party is celebrating by-election success today as candidate Liam Davis is elected to Hackney Council, winning the Stoke Newington seat from Labour in convincing victory. The last time Greens won a by-election from the opposition in London was in 2008.
The Green Party secured a decisive win with 1253 votes, against Labour's 945.

Davis, a Stoke Newington local, campaigned on inadequate housing conditions, reducing youth violence, and for the council to divest from companies complicit in human rights abuses in Palestine.
The Stoke Newington win marks a shift in the political landscape as voters increasingly back Greens to bring balance to the council. It also reflects growing support for the Green Party in Hackney as more residents turn to the party’s vision for a more sustainable and socially just future.
Commenting on his win, Councillor Liam Davis, said:
“Thank you Stoke Newington for trusting me. This win is testimony to the dedicated hours put in by volunteers, and the clear disillusionment with Labour locally and nationally that we met door after door. I also want to thank the local independent councillors who have given us their support in this campaign. We also really appreciate the time that our Deputy Leader, Zack Polanski, gave to us.
“This result signals our community is ready for real hope and real change. I said that I will stay and work hard, and I will so that Stoke Newington becomes greener and fairer. This now means that we are a stronger opposition, but we will always support the Labour administration where we agree.”
Hackney Green Party Coordinator, Stefan Liberadzki, said:
“Liam’s win is a huge step forward for us, and it shows people want Green solutions and representation. We now look forward to the 2026 council elections with the wind in our sails, where we will aim to replace the Conservatives as the largest opposition group on Hackney Council.”
The Green Party has not won a by-election from opposition in London since 2008 in Highgate (Camden).
Hackney Green Party co-operated with Independent Socialists in the council by-elections in London Fields and Stoke Newington. The purpose was to give both the best chance of winning, strengthening the ability for both to challenge the Labour administration where there are shared values, policies and concerns.
The by-elections were the 8th and 9th in Hackney since the last full council elections in May 2022. All by-elections to date have been caused by Labour resignations.
